Domestic Workers Union heads to Philippines in bid to resolve labour recruitment issue
The Director General, advisor to the Union of Domestic Workers, Abdulaziz Al-Ali, announced that the Board of Directors of the Federation will visit the Philippines next week to hold a series of meetings with its counterparts in Manila, and discuss topics related to the return of Filipino domestic workers to Kuwait.
Al-Ali explained to ‘Al-Jarida’ that the meetings will include discussions on the underlying reasons for prohibiting the recruitment of new workers, and allowing only skilled labour, whether to Kuwait or any other country.
He stated that his Philippine counterpart will be asked to hold meetings with the Ministry of Labour in Manila to stress on allowing the recruitment of all workers, whether skilled or new.
Al-Ali said, “The local recruitment offices are fully prepared to start bringing domestic workers from Manila, especially since the market needs them urgently, and the evident inability of any other nationality to fill the large vacuum left by Filipino workers throughout the decision period of their recruitment ban.”
He pointed out that the number of Filipino domestic workers in the local market is significant, which reaffirms their importance to most Kuwaiti and expatriate families who prefer their services, especially due to the ease of communication, their high work ethic, and their educational and awareness levels, enabling them to pick up the customs and traditions of this country.
