
The DNA tests are underway as Air India crash victim identification progresses while the authorities in Ahmedabad are relying on DNA testing to identify victims of the devastating Air India crash that occurred three days ago, as many of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition or severely damaged.
As of today, 47 victims have been identified through DNA analysis, and 24 bodies have been handed over to their families, said Dr. Rajnish Patel, Additional Civil Superintendent.
The deceased include individuals from Rajasthan and various parts of Gujarat, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 (AI171) crashed just minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday at 1:39 p.m., plummeting into the campus of a medical college in Meghaninagar.
The tragedy claimed the lives of 242 passengers and crew, with only one survivor. An additional 29 people on the ground, including five MBBS students, were also killed.
In preparation for transporting victims to their hometowns, 300 ambulances were stationed near the mortuary at Civil Hospital.
Efforts are ongoing to complete identifications and support grieving families through the aftermath of one of India’s worst aviation disasters in recent years.
