US President Donald Trump has announced that a breakthrough in the Russia–Ukraine war could be imminent, revealing plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska.
Trump said Putin was eager to meet “as soon as possible,” and hinted that the long-awaited ceasefire may involve controversial territory swaps, dw.com reports.
Speaking from the White House, Trump declared the conflict might soon be solved, crediting himself with preventing it from escalating into a global war.
The Kremlin confirmed the Alaska summit, calling it “quite logical,” and extended an invitation for Trump to visit Russia afterward.
In a move likely to spark heated debate, Trump said the ceasefire proposal would see land exchanged “to the betterment of both” Russia and Ukraine.
Reports suggest Putin is prepared to end hostilities if Kyiv withdraws from the Donbass region and formally cedes Crimea, a condition Ukraine has long rejected.
Analysts say the planned Trump–Putin talks are a major win for Russian diplomacy, putting Moscow on “equal footing” with Washington.
However, European officials remain wary, warning that Ukraine could be forced to surrender territory without securing lasting peace in return.
