On Saturday, and on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prince Saud bin Mishaal, Deputy Emir of the Makkah Region and Vice Chairman of the Permanent Committee for Hajj and Umrah, formally handed over the new Kiswa (cover) of the Kaaba to the custodians of the Holy Kaaba.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the ceremonial handover documents were signed by Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, Minister of Hajj and Umrah and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, along with Abdulmalik Al-Shaibi, Chief Custodian of the Holy Kaaba.
The handover marks the annual replacement of the Kaaba’s Kiswa, scheduled this year on the first of Muharram, 1447 AH. The new Kiswa was manufactured at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba using high-quality natural silk dyed black.
The covering stands 14 meters high and features a belt around the upper third that is 95 centimeters wide and 47 meters long, composed of 16 intricately woven pieces with Islamic motifs arranged in a square pattern.
This annual tradition reflects the deep commitment of the Saudi leadership to preserving and honoring the sacred rituals associated with the Holy Kaaba. It also highlights the meticulous care given to every stage of the Kiswa’s preparation—from its manufacture to its ceremonial replacement.
