Coops face fines over violations of local produce display rules

The joint committee from the Ministries of Social Affairs and Commerce is continuing its field inspections of cooperative societies to ensure compliance with Ministerial Resolution No. 31/2025, which mandates the purchase and proper display of national agricultural products.

Led by Cooperative Supervisor Yousef Al-Jafour, the committee includes representatives from both ministries. Their mission is to enforce hygiene standards, product labeling, and the promotion of Kuwaiti produce in central markets and cooperative branches, reports Al-Rai daily.

During recent visits to cooperatives in Farwaniya and Hawalli governorates, several judicial seizures were issued against violating cooperative boards, particularly for breaching Article 8, which mandates clean and safe handling of agricultural products. Spoiled goods will be handed over to the Ministry of Interior for investigation and may lead to fines of up to 500 dinars.

Al-Jafour emphasized that strict oversight — after Administrative Resolution No. 1650/2025 — has significantly boosted compliance, raising the rate of local produce purchases in cooperatives from 46% in June 2024 to over 70% currently.

He added that gradual penalties are applied to violators, ranging from warnings to full suspension of board signatures and ministry dealings. If violations continue, labor files may be suspended in cooperation with the Public Authority for Manpower.

Top violations which have been identified included poor storage causing rot and spoilage, improper display methods and failure to regularly rotate goods.
