Ministry of Commerce and Industry has met with representatives of shipping companies to assess the latest developments affecting maritime transport and the supply of goods to the country amid the current regional circumstances.
The meeting was held by the Department of Commercial Control and Consumer Protection, with discussions focusing on the impact of developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz on maritime navigation and shipping routes.
Faisal Al-Ansari, Director of the Department of Commercial Control and Consumer Protection, said the discussions examined the repercussions of the developments on maritime traffic and shipping lines, as well as the resulting increases in transportation, shipping, insurance and logistics costs.
Al-Ansari said these developments have significantly increased the cost of supplying goods to Kuwait. He stressed the need to monitor shipping movements and related costs to ensure the continued flow of goods into the local market and limit any unjustified impact on consumer prices.
Shipping companies highlight rising container costs
During the meeting, representatives of shipping companies pointed to the sharp increase in container costs, which has created an additional expense that could ultimately be reflected in the prices of goods and products.
The companies also explained that they are working to use alternative shipping routes and lines when necessary. These measures include collecting and receiving containers in various GCC countries and making use of alternative ports.
According to Al-Ansari, these arrangements are intended to ensure the continuity of goods movement and prevent disruptions to supply operations.
He said the alternative mechanisms would provide suitable options for delivering goods to Kuwait, reduce delays and limit additional shipping costs, helping maintain the smooth flow of supplies and stability in the local market.
Ministry explores measures to contain shipping cost impact
Al-Ansari said the Department of Commercial Control and Consumer Protection will study appropriate solutions and alternatives to mitigate the effects of rising shipping costs.
The measures are aimed at strengthening consumer protection, maintaining the stability of commodity prices and ensuring the continued availability of goods in Kuwait’s local market.
