Chinese Ambassador bids farewell to Kuwait after three memorable years

From the very first day I arrived in Kuwait, I felt the love and friendship of its people. I will never forget my diplomatic life here, nor the deep and beautiful impressions it has left on me -- Ambassador Zhang Jianwei

As he prepares to conclude his diplomatic mission, Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Zhang Jianwei praised the strength and progress of Kuwaiti-Chinese relations, describing his three-year tenure as a deeply rewarding and unforgettable chapter in his career.

Ambassador Zhang, who officially began his posting on May 22, 2022, announced that he will leave Kuwait on June 7, 2025, marking the end of what he called a “wonderful and precious” diplomatic experience — his first as an ambassador, local media reports.

Speaking during a press conference held on the sidelines of a cultural event at the Chinese Cultural Center, Zhang expressed heartfelt gratitude to Kuwait’s leadership and people, emphasizing the warmth and friendship he encountered throughout his time in the country.

“From the very first day I arrived in Kuwait, I felt the love and friendship of its people,” he said. “I will never forget my diplomatic life here, nor the deep and beautiful impressions it has left on me.”

Zhang highlighted the significant strides made in bilateral relations during his tenure, crediting the guidance of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Chinese President Xi Jinping for elevating strategic cooperation.

“Our relations have witnessed remarkable development and notable achievements, particularly through the implementation of agreements signed during His Highness the Amir’s recent visit to China,” he stated.

The ambassador emphasized his commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two nations, noting the launch of several joint projects and expressing optimism about the future of the partnership.

“There are promising projects already underway,” he said. “I am confident the embassy will continue to build on this momentum and deepen cooperation with Kuwait.”

Zhang offered his sincere thanks to the Kuwaiti leadership, including His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, as well as the Kuwaiti government and people, and his colleagues for their unwavering support throughout his mission.

He also expressed special appreciation to Kuwait’s media community, acknowledging their vital role in strengthening cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

When asked about his next diplomatic assignment, Zhang said his future posting has yet to be determined and added his in Kuwait has not been appointed.

However, he expressed confidence that the next ambassador will “continue to advance relations and bring them to greater heights.”

“I leave Kuwait with great affection for its people and culture,” he concluded. “I especially enjoyed visiting diwaniyas and will always cherish the Kuwaiti people’s appreciation for Chinese culture and their enthusiasm for travel to China.”

Zhang Jianwei’s departure marks the end of a tenure that not only strengthened bilateral relations but also deepened people-to-people connections between China and Kuwait.
