China and Pakistan have jointly called on the United States and Iran to immediately halt hostilities and return to the negotiating table, amid escalating military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The appeal was made during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Shanghai, according to a statement issued by China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
Expressing deep concern over the worsening regional situation, the two ministers urged all parties to stop military actions, overcome differences, eliminate obstacles to diplomacy, and resume dialogue aimed at reaching a comprehensive peace agreement through negotiations.
They also stressed the importance of continued support from the international community to facilitate diplomatic efforts and promote regional stability.
Wang praised Pakistan’s mediation role, describing the first phase of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran as “hard-won” and significant for regional peace.
“The core provisions of the memorandum not only serve the long-term interests of the parties involved but also reflect the expectations of the international community,” Wang said.
Warning against further escalation, he added, “Peace is within reach; we cannot afford to lose it now.” He urged all sides to honor their commitments and fully implement the provisions of the Islamabad agreement.
Wang also reaffirmed China’s continued support for Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives, saying Beijing would maintain its constructive role in promoting de-escalation.
