A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile’s Atacama region on Friday, causing power outages for over 23,000 people but resulting in no injuries, according to official sources.
The National Seismological Center reported that the quake occurred 54 kilometers south of Diego de Almagro. The tremor was strongly felt in several areas, especially in Copiapo, where windows were shattered and sections of walls collapsed. The city lies about 800 kilometers north of Santiago.
According to Miguel Ortiz, deputy director of the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service, the earthquake caused minor landslides and disrupted power supply to thousands of residents across the region.
President Gabriel Boric confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that no injuries had been reported and that authorities were actively monitoring the situation and addressing the damages.
