
The Soul Food Sunday Community Dinner, held in honor of Black History Month, was a remarkable celebration of African-American heritage, highlighting its rich cultural contributions and vibrant traditions.
Hosted today, Monday, February 24th, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Kuwait, ABCK-AmCham Kuwait, Kuwait and Gulf Link Transport Company(KGL), the event underscored the historical significance of Black History Month.
The evening was a vibrant fusion of history, culture, and community, allowing guests to savor authentic soul food dishes, each rich in flavor and steeped in tradition, honoring African-American culinary heritage.
This memorable event was made possible through the generous support of key partners, including Hyatt Regency Al Kout Mall, Magnolia Bakery, and the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait.
The U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait, H.E. Karen Sasahara, inaugurated the evening with heartfelt welcome remarks, setting the tone for a night of celebration and reflection.
Special recognitions were made by Economic Officer Kala Deterville, followed by ABCK-AmCham Kuwait Chairman Pete Swift, who delivered a speech on the deep personal significance of Soul Food Sundays in his childhood and their enduring role in uniting communities.
Political Counselor Melinda Crowley, the visionary behind the event, also delivered remarks highlighting the historical, social, and culinary legacy of soul food in the United States, emphasizing its deep-rooted significance in African-American culture.
The highlight of the night was a captivating musical performance by Melba Guerrero, who delivered a heartfelt rendition of the powerful anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” accompanied by the soulful melodies of guitarist Alfredo Socha.
Lieutenant Colonel Gregory M. Jones, Chief of Staff at the Office of Military Cooperation Kuwait, delivered a profound invocation, highlighting the values of unity and remembrance that lie at the heart of Black History Month.
The buffet dinner showcased a mouthwatering array of soul food classics, including crispy fried chicken, savory beef ribs, tender fried fish, tangy coleslaw, and refreshing watermelon salad. A selection of sides, delectable desserts, and beverages completed the feast, creating a rich culinary experience that united guests in celebration.
The event concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Deputy Chief of Mission Steven Butler, who urged attendees to reflect on the significance of Black History Month and its enduring role in advancing equality, justice, and the appreciation of diversity.
