A cargo plane arriving from Dubai skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday, the airport operator announced.
Images from the scene showed a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft operated by AirACT partially submerged near the airport’s sea wall, with its fuselage split and an escape slide deployed, according to news agencies.
According to airport authorities, four crew members on board were rescued, while Hong Kong media reported that two people in a ground vehicle near the runway were killed after the plane apparently struck them. The South China Morning Post, citing police sources, said an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
Following the incident, the northern runway at Hong Kong International Airport—the world’s busiest cargo hub—was temporarily closed, while the south and central runways remain operational, ensuring continued air traffic movement despite the disruption.
