CAPT approves rollout of 300,000 smart water meters to boost digital transformation

- The smart meters will enable the ministry to conduct accurate remote consumption readings while also detecting water leaks and cases of tampering. Officials believe the system will significantly strengthen efforts to rationalize water consumption, reduce wastage, and minimize operational losses.
The Central Agency for Public Tenders has approved a request by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy to float a tender for the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of smart water meters as part of Kuwait’s broader digital transformation strategy.
The project includes the installation of 300,000 smart water meters during the first phase, supporting the ministry’s efforts to accelerate digitization targets outlined in the national development plan across government institutions. The initiative is also aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and improving the management of water resources.

The new meters are based on advanced technologies that automatically transmit consumption data to the ministry’s central monitoring system, allowing faster and more efficient tracking and management of water usage across the country.
Sources indicated that the ministry had already completed the technical specifications for the tender after reviewing smart meter models used in several Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
The ministry also assessed specifications most suitable for Kuwait’s environmental and climatic conditions to ensure optimal performance and compliance by participating companies.
In a related development, the Central Agency for Public Tenders also approved the ministry’s request to issue a tender for the supply and installation of 132 kV underground electrical cables. The project is intended to connect two main transformer stations in the Amghara Industrial Area while strengthening the electricity network at both 132 kV and 33 kV levels.
The ministry said the project forms part of ongoing plans to enhance the efficiency of Kuwait’s electrical infrastructure and meet the growing energy demand in industrial zones. The expansion is expected to reinforce grid stability and improve the reliability of electricity supply amid continued urban and industrial growth across the country.
