Calm, resilience, and unity define Kuwait’s response to sounds of sirens

Across the country life continues despite Iranian attacks and air raid alerts

  • Authorities have introduced a number of precautionary measures to manage the situation. These include reducing attendance in some government offices to 30 percent, shifting schools and universities to distance learning, and temporarily suspending public celebrations, plays, and social events.

Two weeks after the start of Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait, daily life in the country reflects a remarkable sense of calm and resilience, contrary to what many might expect under such circumstances.

In recent days, residents have occasionally heard the sound of air raid sirens—an unfamiliar experience for a nation long associated with stability and security.

Yet these moments have not triggered panic. Instead, they have become part of a new reality that both the state and society are addressing with calm and organized responses.

Despite the tensions, many aspects of daily life continue at a normal pace. Shopping activity remains steady without overcrowding, and markets are well supplied with goods. Residents continue to follow precautionary measures while maintaining their routines.

The first sound of the sirens prompted questions among some citizens about whether Kuwaitis might lose the sense of security they have long enjoyed.

However, the atmosphere in the streets quickly provided an answer. Kuwait’s history of overcoming challenges has fostered a strong belief within society that crises—no matter how serious—are temporary phases.

Authorities have introduced a number of precautionary measures to manage the situation. These include reducing attendance in some government offices to 30 percent, shifting schools and universities to distance learning, and temporarily suspending public celebrations, plays, and social events.

While these measures aim to enhance safety, they have not brought life to a standstill. Instead, they reflect a strategy of cautious management, allowing daily activities to continue while encouraging the public to adhere to official guidelines.

A field tour conducted by Al Qabas Newspaper in Souq Al Mubarakiya and several shopping malls revealed families spending time in public spaces while observing safety instructions. Children spoke about recent events in simple yet confident terms.

One student said: “I’m Kuwaiti and I’m not afraid. God is with us and Kuwait’s heroes are with us.” Another child in Al-Mubarakiya added, “We have heroes protecting us—the army and police are guarding Kuwait.”

Many children demonstrated awareness of safety instructions. One girl explained that if the siren sounds, they should stay away from windows and remain in a safe place while listening to their parents’ instructions. Another child said their family would move to a basement or other safe area if necessary.

Their conversations also reflected gratitude toward those protecting the country. One child said, “We pray that God gives strength to the army, police and National Guard,” while another expressed prayers for those who lost their lives defending the nation.

Among young people, discussions showed a heightened sense of responsibility. A young man interviewed at a shopping mall said the most important thing during such times is to remain calm and follow official guidance. Another stressed the need to avoid spreading rumors and to rely only on credible information.

Some youths believe their role extends beyond simply following the news. “Our responsibility is to share accurate information and help maintain calm in society,” one said.

Daily briefings by government authorities have played an important role in reinforcing public confidence. In this regard, Colonel Othman Al Gharib, Director of the Security Media Department at the Ministry of Interior (Kuwait), noted that the daily briefings are not only meant to deliver news but also serve as a strategic tool to maintain psychological stability within society.

Behind the scenes, thousands of personnel across different sectors continue working to safeguard the country. From the armed forces and security services to emergency response and civil defense teams, national cadres remain on duty around the clock to ensure readiness for any situation.

Through a balance of caution and reassurance, Kuwait continues to navigate this challenging phase steadily. While uncertainties remain, the prevailing spirit across society highlights a deeper reality: the country’s strength lies not only in its resources but also in the unity of its people and their determination to stand together in times of adversity.
