Calls for permanent halt on Filipino workers to Kuwait spark debate

Recruitment agencies were asked to suggest ways to enhance worker protections in Kuwait, with proposals to include specific job conditions in contracts and shorten the contract duration to two years.

Philippine Senate discussions called for stricter measures on sending new workers to Kuwait, with some warning that a ban could harm the 260,000 Filipinos already there.

Philippine proposals could further complicate Kuwaits labor market, especially with the expiration of contracts for tens of thousands of domestic workers and the inability to address their shortages.

Discussions during the Philippine Senate Committee on Migrant Workers meeting highlighted calls for stricter measures on sending new workers to Kuwait, with some suggesting a permanent halt. However, others cautioned that such a ban could negatively impact the 260,000 Filipino workers currently in Kuwait, according to Q8-Press.

While reports from the Philippine Department of Labor indicated that the ministry is considering a “new ban on proliferation,” Kuwaiti sources revealed that officials from the Department of Migrant Workers in Manila held a meeting two days ago with the owners and directors of employment agencies to discuss safety measures in the deployment of Filipino workers in Kuwait.

“Recruitment agencies have been asked to provide suggestions on how the government will continue to strengthen protection measures for our workers in Kuwait,” a source explained, adding that during the dialogue, agencies proposed including specific job conditions and descriptions in the employment contract, along with a reduction in contract duration to two years.

Local sources believe that these Philippine proposals could further complicate Kuwait’s labor market, especially with the expiration of contracts for tens of thousands of domestic workers and the inability to address their shortages. This issue is expected to worsen sharply in the coming months, compounded by the lack of agreements with other countries to provide new sources of labor.
