Awqaf, MEW agree to shorten prayer intervals in mosques to conserve electricity

The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs affirmed on Friday its full commitment—alongside the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy—to supporting national efforts to conserve electricity by shortening the time interval between the call to prayer (Azhan) and the commencement of congregational prayers (Iqama) in mosques to no more than ten minutes.
In a statement released to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the ministry explained that this directive was conveyed through an official circular issued by the Assistant Undersecretary for the Mosques Sector, Bader Al-Otaibi. The circular instructed imams and muezzins across the country to strictly adhere to the reduced prayer interval as part of a broader campaign to rationalize power consumption.
The ministry clarified that this measure comes in response to the current rise in electrical loads across the country, coupled with the fact that several power stations are presently undergoing scheduled maintenance. These conditions necessitate concerted national efforts to manage electricity usage efficiently, particularly in public facilities such as mosques.
The Ministry of Awqaf reiterated its full cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity’s strategic plan, emphasizing its role in promoting energy conservation during the summer peak period.
