Australia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after playing out a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Paraguay in their final Group D match on Thursday.
The point was enough for the Socceroos to finish second in the group and book their place in the knockout stage, where they will continue their World Cup campaign.
Paraguay, meanwhile, produced a disciplined defensive performance to earn a valuable point. The result leaves them almost certain to progress as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, with qualification dependent on the outcome of matches in the remaining groups.
Despite both teams creating chances, neither side could find the breakthrough in a closely contested encounter, as solid defending and goalkeeping ensured the match ended goalless.
