At least 60 dead, over 100 missing in India after floods and landslides

At least 60 people have been confirmed dead and more than 100 others remain missing in Indian-administered Kashmir following heavy rains that triggered flash floods and landslides on Thursday, authorities and local Indian media reported today.

The disaster struck as pilgrims gathered for lunch before ascending a hill to a popular religious shrine, when sudden flooding, mudslides, and torrents swept through the area.

The force of the water carried away people, scattered bags, clothes, and personal belongings, and toppled electricity poles.

Rescue teams have been working relentlessly, using shovels, ropes, and makeshift bridges to search for survivors and recover bodies from the rubble.

“We were told that between 100 and 150 people could be buried under the rubble,” a rescue worker told ANI.

This marks the second major disaster in the Himalayan region in just over a week, highlighting the vulnerability of the area to extreme weather events during the monsoon season.
