ASEAN diplomatic missions join UN-Habitat in Shuwaikh beach cleanup campaign

. . . the aim is to support Kuwait’s environment

The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) in Kuwait and the Gulf Cooperation Council, in cooperation with the embassies of ASEAN member states accredited to Kuwait — Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia — organized a large-scale beach cleanup campaign at Shuwaikh Beach, with the participation of ASEAN community members and volunteers.

The initiative was to support Kuwait Municipality’s ongoing efforts to protect coastal areas and promote public awareness on the importance of preserving open public spaces and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

In a statement to KUNA, Dr. Ameera Al-Hassan, Head of UN-Habitat Kuwait and GCC, said, “Safeguarding Kuwait’s coastline is a shared responsibility that requires active collaboration between government entities, the diplomatic community, and civil society. Today’s campaign reinforces UN-Habitat’s commitment to supporting Kuwait’s vision for sustainable urban development and enhancing the quality of life in cities.”

She added that the partnership with ASEAN embassies reflects a strong spirit of cooperation in environmental and urban development issues, noting that the active participation of ASEAN expatriates communities highlights “the friendship, inclusiveness, and collective responsibility that characterize Kuwait’s diverse society.”

Dr. Al-Hassan affirmed that UN-Habitat continues to work closely with government institutions — particularly Kuwait Municipality — to advance sustainable management of public spaces, support national efforts to protect the coastal environment, and reduce marine litter through public engagement and community-based initiatives.

She concluded by saying, “We are proud of this fruitful collaboration and will continue to work with our partners to strengthen environmental awareness and promote daily sustainable practices across the community.”

The ASEAN representatives expressed their high appreciation of Kuwait Municipality’s continuous efforts, and thanked their community volunteers for joining this public environmental awareness activity that reflects their friendship spirit with Kuwaiti people, and wishing that public parks users keep them clean.
