Amir’s visit to France marks historic milestone in bilateral relations

Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Olivier Gauvin affirmed the official visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to France is a significant historical milestone, reflecting the deep-rooted and strategic relationship between Kuwait and France, which has spanned nearly 60 years.

In remarks delivered during the French Embassy’s celebration of Bastille Day — France’s National Day —Ambassador Gauvin highlighted the exceptional significance of this year’s commemoration.

The occasion coincided with the Amir’s official visit to Paris, where he is scheduled to attend the national military parade alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, followed by a bilateral meeting at the Élysée Palace.
The celebration was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, senior officials, and members of the diplomatic corps in Kuwait, reports Al-Rai daily.

Ambassador Gauvin noted that Kuwaiti-French relations are founded on long-standing trust and cooperation, particularly in the areas of defense and security. He referenced the historic 1992 defense agreement between France and Kuwait—described as the oldest such agreement between France and any Gulf country—as well as ongoing military training programs and bilateral military cooperation.

Gauvin also pointed to French companies’ increasing interest in Kuwait’s national development plan, “New Kuwait 2035,” with a focus on collaboration in transportation, energy, and the development of sustainable cities. He praised Kuwait’s growing investments in France, especially in advanced sectors such as technology and artificial intelligence.

In the cultural and humanitarian spheres, the ambassador emphasized the strong ties between the two countries, noting that France remains the leading Schengen destination for Kuwaiti tourists. He also highlighted the active Francophone community in Kuwait and underscored France’s commitment to expanding academic and scientific cooperation. He expressed hope for an increase in the number of Kuwaiti students enrolling in French universities.

Ambassador Gauvin concluded by expressing deep appreciation for Kuwait’s hospitality and friendship. He reaffirmed the French Embassy’s dedication to further strengthening the relationship in service of the mutual interests of both nations and their peoples.
