Two draws and a sensational Opening Ceremony have provided a memorable first day for the Khaleeji Zain 26 (Arabian Gulf Cup) that has kicked off in Kuwait.
In the opening match in Group A, Kuwait sent their fans into raptures by taking the lead against Oman, but the 2023 finalists drew level for a 1-1 draw at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.
Kuwait took the lead in the 34th minute through Yousef Nasser’s towering header after a slick move opened up the Omani defence. But Oman levelled shortly before half-time when they broke down the right and Issam Al Sabhi was on hand to slide home the cross in the 42nd minute for a share of the spoils.
In the later Group A game at the Jaber Al-Mubarak International Stadium, star striker Akram Afif gave Qatar the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute against the United Arab Emirates. But the UAE equalised in first half added time with a well-taken goal from winger, Yahya Al Ghassani.
It means all four teams are on a point going into the second round of matches on Tuesday.
Prior to the opening matches, the Khaleeji Zain 26 got underway with a sparkling Opening Ceremony that captured the essence of Arabia magnificently with a performance packed with music, special effects and choreography.
Spectacular fireworks and jaw-dropping drone displays dazzled a captivated 42,445 audience in the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium with ‘The Future is Gulf’ entitled ceremony also watched by a television audience of millions across the region.
It all contributed to a memorable opening day for the Khaleeji Zain 26 which will continue with Group B matches on Sunday when Saudi Arabia take on Bahrain, and reigning champions Iraq come up against Yemen.
The tournament will continue through until the final to be played on January 3.
