Al-Sharheed unveils strategy to cut fish prices, boost local production

Chairman of the Kuwait Fishermen’s Union, Abdullah Al-Sarheed, said the newly-elected board of directors has introduced a strategic plan to reduce fish prices and enhance local production in close coordination with relevant government institutions.

Since assuming the presidency of the union last April, Al-Sarheed praised the support extended by Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Acting Minister of Finance, and Chairman of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources, saying this backing has been instrumental in advancing the initiatives adopted by the union.

Al-Sarheed outlined the most pressing challenges facing the fishing sector, including piracy in Kuwait’s economic waters, a shortage of skilled labor, the absence of a dedicated fishing village, and the growing effects of climate change on small fishing boats trawlers, reports Al-Rai daily.

To address these obstacles, he called for legal amendments to allow midge fishing in Kuwait Bay, to permit net fishing after the shrimp season, and to streamline procedures to recruit foreign workers.

Emphasizing the importance of sustainability, Al-Sarheed said that fishermen place marine environmental balance at the heart of their work.

He highlighted that this season’s catch has been abundant, with local fish prices lower than imported alternatives.

Looking ahead, Al-Sarheed revealed plans for the union to begin importing a wide variety of fish to stabilize market supply and further control consumer prices.
