After Trump calls Indian economy ‘DEAD’, US-made AI platforms say otherwise

The backlash was swift. Union Minister Piyush Goyal countered Trump’s remarks, reaffirming that India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with expectations of becoming the third-largest economy in the near future.

US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks describing the Indian economy as “dead” have sparked a wave of political reactions and fact-checking efforts. In response to the controversy, India’s NDTV put the claim to the test — by turning to five leading artificial intelligence platforms built in Trump’s own country.

NDTV asked each AI a simple question: “Is the Indian economy dead?”

The platforms — ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, Meta AI, and Copilot — all offered responses that flatly contradicted Trump’s assertion, according to Indian news reports.

  • ChatGPT replied: “India’s economy is far from dead. It’s dynamic. It is ambitious.”
  • Grok said: “No, the Indian economy is not dead. It remains one of the fastest-growing major economies globally.”
  • Gemini responded with: “The Indian economy is characterized by strong growth.”
  • Meta AI echoed the sentiment: “The Indian economy is not dead. It’s one of the fastest-growing major economies globally.”
  • Copilot was even more direct: “Not even close. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.”

Trump’s claim came as he announced a new 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, coupled with an additional penalty linked to India’s growing trade ties with Russia—particularly in crude oil and defense equipment. \

Writing on Truth Social, he stated: “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We’ve done very little business with India. Their tariffs are too high—among the highest in the world.”

The backlash was swift. Union Minister Piyush Goyal countered Trump’s remarks, reaffirming that India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with expectations of becoming the third-largest economy in the near future.

When Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chose to echo Trump’s criticism, saying: “He (Trump) is right. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill responded “India’s economy is alive and kicking. Rahul Gandhi’s logic is dead.”

Shergill highlighted India’s current global economic rankings — 4th largest economy, 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer, 3rd largest automobile manufacturer, and 4th strongest stock market.

Trump’s tariff announcement comes amid growing US-India trade tensions, particularly after India’s increased import of Russian crude oil following the Ukraine conflict.

In announcing the 25 per cent tariff and penalty, Trump wrote: “All things not good! India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 per cent, plus a penalty for the above, starting on August first.”

As the diplomatic and economic fallout unfolds, Trump’s claim appears to hold little weight — not just among economists, but also among the AI systems built in his own country.
