Kuwait, UN officials review humanitarian cooperation amid global challenges

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held talks with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher in New York, focusing on Kuwait’s relationship with the United Nations and efforts to strengthen international humanitarian cooperation.

The meeting took place Tuesday evening at Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the UN on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks reviewed Kuwait’s close relations with the United Nations and its specialised agencies and bodies, with particular attention to cooperation in the humanitarian field.

The discussions also examined ways to enhance coordination and cooperation in responding to humanitarian crises and challenges at both the regional and international levels. The meeting comes as humanitarian issues remain a key part of international discussions at the UN General Assembly, placing greater emphasis on coordination among countries and international organisations in addressing crises.

Sheikh Jarrah also met UN Undersecretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Dr Rania Al-Mashat at Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the UN. During that meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations between Kuwait and ESCWA and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in economic, social and development fields of common interest, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The two meetings together highlighted the breadth of Kuwait’s engagement with the United Nations, extending from humanitarian coordination and crisis response to economic, social and development cooperation. Kuwait’s discussions with senior UN officials also underscored the importance of continued coordination on issues affecting the region and the wider international community, particularly through the UN’s humanitarian and development institutions.
For Kuwait, its engagement with the UN humanitarian system forms part of its broader diplomatic and humanitarian role, with the latest talks underscoring the importance of coordinated international action in responding to humanitarian challenges.
