GTD to launch smart home vehicle impoundment system on Sept 6

The General Traffic Department will begin implementing a smart home vehicle impoundment system on Sunday, September 6, allowing vehicles whose violations warrant impoundment to be placed under electronic monitoring at designated home locations.
The GTD said the smart device will be installed on the vehicle at the site where the violation is recorded. The impoundment period will officially begin at midnight on the same day, giving the vehicle owner time to move the vehicle to the location designated for home impoundment.
The installation fee for the smart device is 10 dinars, while the home impoundment service will cost 2 dinars per day for the duration of the impoundment. The system will also allow vehicles currently held at traffic impoundment facilities to be transferred to the smart home system so owners can complete the remaining portion of their impoundment period at home.
Once the impoundment period ends, the violator will receive a notification through the Sahel application confirming that the period has expired. The vehicle owner will then be required to visit one of the locations designated by the GTD to complete the procedures for releasing the vehicle.
The Traffic Directorate said the introduction of the system is part of efforts to modernise traffic services, simplify procedures and improve the quality of services provided to motorists.
It also urged drivers to comply with traffic regulations and avoid violations, stressing that adherence to the law is essential to protect drivers and other road users and strengthen traffic safety.
The new system is expected to provide greater flexibility in implementing vehicle impoundment procedures while maintaining official oversight of vehicles subject to mandatory impoundment.
