Bank of England banknotes to feature King Charles

The Bank of England announced on Wednesday that banknotes featuring the image of King Charles will be released into circulation in Britain starting June 5.

These banknotes, made of polymer, will come in denominations of five, ten, twenty, and fifty pounds, alongside the existing notes featuring the late Queen Elizabeth, reports Al-Jarida daily.

The decision to introduce the new banknotes follows the unveiling of their design over a year ago. The Bank of England clarified that these new notes will be printed solely to replace damaged currency and to meet any increase in overall demand for banknotes.

This approach aligns with the directives of the royal family and aims to minimize the environmental and financial impacts of the transition.

Emphasizing a gradual introduction, the Bank of England stated that the new banknotes featuring the 75-year-old monarch, known for his environmental conservation efforts, will enter circulation slowly.

King Charles, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth II following her seventy-year reign and passing in 2022, will become the second king to be depicted on Bank of England banknotes.

The introduction of banknotes bearing King Charles’s image follows the issuance of coins featuring the monarch’s likeness by the British Mint in late 2022.
