Middle East conflict intensifies: Airstrikes, Hezbollah engagements, and rising civilian toll

  • Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, survived the attacks
  • Death toll surpasses 800 casualties across Lebanon and Iran
  • In Washington, Trump is facing growing criticism from Democrats over the administration’s handling of the crisis, citing a lack of clear strategy and insufficient planning

The US and Israel’s military campaign in the Middle East continues to intensify, with airstrikes targeting Iran and Lebanon. Recent attacks included a strike on a hotel near Beirut and the building of the Assembly of Experts in Qom, Iran, as the death toll surpasses 800 casualties across both countries.

The Middle East conflict entered its fifth day as U.S. and Israeli airstrikes continued to target Iranian facilities, including key sites in Tehran.

Reports indicate strikes on Washington’s consulate in Dubai and a port in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, underscoring the widening impact of the conflict across the region.

In the midst of the violence, reports from Iranian sources cited by Reuters indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei, a son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, survived the attacks.

Though he has never held an elected or appointed government position, a 2008 US diplomatic cable described Mojtaba as “widely viewed within the regime as a capable and forceful leader and manager who may someday succeed to at least a share of national leadership.”

The ongoing escalation has not only increased the humanitarian toll but also heightened regional and international tensions, with further retaliatory attacks expected as both sides continue their operations, reports Al-Jazeera.

Meanwhile, in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump is facing growing criticism from Democrats over the administration’s handling of the crisis, citing a lack of clear strategy and insufficient planning.

Lawmakers are pressing for greater oversight and accountability, questioning the rationale and preparedness of the U.S. response.

Trump’s national security team has appeared before Congress, seeking support for the administration’s military approach. Lawmakers are preparing votes on war powers resolutions and debating the extent of U.S. involvement in the conflict, as political tensions mount alongside military operations.

The human cost of the hostilities continues to rise.

Reports indicate heavy civilian casualties in Iran, mass displacement in Lebanon, and extensive infrastructure damage across the region. As the conflict spreads, the wider Middle East grapples with the immediate humanitarian and strategic consequences of escalating violence.
