Fadia Survive & Thrive holds flagship World Cancer Day event

. . . under the theme ‘United by Stories, Powered by Knowledge’

In a powerful gathering dedicated to awareness, resilience, and shared human experience, Fadia Survive & Thrive hosted its annual flagship World Cancer Day event at The Hub, bringing together patients, advocates, medical professionals, diplomats, and community leaders for a day centered on knowledge, empowerment, and hope.

Held against the scenic backdrop of Kuwait’s Gulf Road, the event carried special significance as the organization celebrated ten years since its founding and marked seven years since its last collaboration at the venue.

The milestone reflected a decade of sustained advocacy and community engagement aimed at improving cancer awareness, prevention, and patient support both locally and internationally.

Dr. Rania Azmi, President of Fadia Survive & Thrive, described the occasion as a meaningful reflection on the organization’s journey and mission. Aligning with the Union for International Cancer Control’s global World Cancer Day campaign, “United by Unique,” the organization introduced its 2026 theme: “United by Stories, Powered by Knowledge.”

As an active member of international networks including the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the ABC Global Alliance, and the World Patients Alliance, Fadia Survive & Thrive continues to champion patient advocacy, education, and access to reliable information across borders.

A Community United by Experience

The event welcomed a diverse, multinational audience that included cancer patients and their families, patient advocates, volunteers, diplomats, and prominent media figures visiting Kuwait during the country’s National and Liberation Day celebrations.

Opening the program, Dr. Azmi expressed heartfelt appreciation to attendees, particularly patients who participated while undergoing treatment, as well as their families and supporters. She also acknowledged the presence of distinguished guests, including H.E. Noshrevan Lomtatidze, Ambassador of the Republic of Georgia to Kuwait, alongside leading oncologists, international advocates, and respected members of Kuwait’s media community.

Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Shared Stories

The program featured a dynamic lineup of speakers who combined professional expertise with lived experience, reinforcing the event’s focus on prevention, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator Giorgia Teofilo delivered an engaging session highlighting the therapeutic value of mindful movement for cancer patients and the broader public. Her presentation emphasized empowerment through self-awareness, encouraging participants to reclaim agency over their healing journey.

Joining virtually from Belgrade, patient advocate Sara Bojanić of Europa Donna Serbia shared insights on the importance of international collaboration in patient advocacy. She stressed the need for accessible, reliable health information and research-driven policy initiatives, while introducing Serbia’s upcoming patient navigation application designed to support women living with breast cancer.

Adding a deeply personal perspective, Fares Al Shammari shared his cancer journey, offering a message of resilience that resonated strongly with attendees. His call to “pay it forward” encouraged participants to support others emotionally and share credible information within their communities.

Prevention and Quality of Life at the Forefront

Dr. Azmi later led an interactive activity encouraging participants to continue conversations beyond the event, followed by a comprehensive presentation focusing on prevention strategies, wellbeing, and quality of life. Drawing on insights from international advocacy forums, including the Advanced Breast Cancer Consensus Conference in Portugal, she highlighted the importance of informed decision-making and patient empowerment.

A lively question-and-answer session concluded the discussions, fostering open dialogue between speakers and attendees.

Closing with Healing and Hope

The event concluded with a trauma-sensitive yoga practice, reinforcing the day’s message of holistic wellbeing and emotional healing. Educational displays highlighted global advocacy initiatives, including the ABC Global Alliance’s Global Decade Report and Global Charter, presented alongside Arabic translations to ensure accessibility.

Conducted in both Arabic and English, the event underscored inclusivity and community engagement — core values that define Fadia Survive & Thrive’s mission.

Reflecting on the day’s impact, Dr. Azmi noted that such gatherings play a vital role in dispelling misconceptions, promoting knowledge, and reminding society that wellbeing and quality of life are essential not only for those facing cancer, but for everyone.

Through shared stories and collective learning, the event reaffirmed a powerful message: awareness builds strength, knowledge inspires action, and community creates hope.
