Kuwait to sign North Kabd wastewater plant contract with Chinese firm this month

Minister of Public Works Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan announced that the executive contract for the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment and Purification Plant will be signed later this month with a Chinese state-owned company nominated by the Chinese government.

The signing ceremony will take place under the patronage and in the presence of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah, alongside members of the Ministerial Committee overseeing major development projects, senior representatives of the Chinese company, and the Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait, Yang Xin.

Dr Al-Mashaan made the statement when she chaired the 46th meeting of the Ministerial Committee tasked with following up on the implementation of major national projects.

The meeting reviewed progress on development initiatives included in memoranda of understanding signed between Kuwait and several sisterly and friendly countries, reports A-Rai daily.

Discussions covered cooperation in a range of strategic sectors, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project, electricity system development, renewable energy expansion, low-carbon waste recycling systems, housing development, environmental infrastructure for wastewater treatment, free and economic zones, land reclamation, ecosystem rehabilitation, afforestation programs, environmental protection and efforts to combat sand encroachment.

Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs and committee rapporteur Ambassador H.E. Sameeh Jawhar Hayat said the meeting formed part of regular follow-up efforts to monitor agreements and memoranda signed with partner countries.

He stressed continued coordination among state bodies to accelerate the implementation of priority development projects.

The committee also reviewed updates on ongoing executive procedures, including progress on the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project. A proposal by China Baowu Steel Investment Company to establish an iron and steel production and refining plant on Bubiyan Island, near the port site, was presented.

The Kuwaiti government expressed interest in supporting the project and exploring joint investment, with the aim of utilizing its output for the local market.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs Abdul Latif Al-Mashari, Minister of Finance Dr. Yaqoub Al-Rifai, Director General of the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority Sheikh Dr. Meshaal Al-Jaber, Head of the Fatwa and Legislation Department Counselor Salah Al-Majed, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Dr. Adel Al-Zamil, and senior officials from the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs.
