Push to strengthen accessibility oversight as database plan wins approval
. . . to assess the suitability of existing public facilities and buildings for people with disabilities.

Engineer Farah Al-Roumi, head of the Disability Affairs Committee at the Municipal Council, announced the committee has given nod for her proposal to establish a comprehensive database to assess the suitability of existing public facilities and buildings for people with disabilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of the committee’s first meeting, Al-Roumi said members reviewed the items on the agenda and decided to refer the issue of forming a joint committee to oversee the implementation of the Kuwait Accessibility Code for People with Disabilities to the legal department.

The step aims to determine the competent authority responsible for following up on the application of accessibility requirements in line with universal design standards, reports Al-Rai daily.
She added that questions listed on the agenda regarding the activation of monitoring and inspection mechanisms to ensure compliance with accessibility requirements were postponed due to the absence of the concerned entity.
Meanwhile, the matter of activating a joint committee to review the provisions of the Kuwait Accessibility Code under general design principles was referred to the executive body for further action.
Al-Roumi stressed that these steps fall within broader efforts to enhance inclusion and ensure that public infrastructure better meets the needs of people with disabilities.
