India’s growth and development reflect the ideals of Republic Day, which celebrates the adoption of our Constitution and the strength of Indian democracy.

Since 1950, India has transformed into a major global economy, evolving from socialist-inspired planning in the 1950s–80s with slow, state-led development, to rapid growth following the 1991 liberalization. This period has been marked by significant GDP expansion, rising incomes, increased industrialization, and a growing international influence, despite persistent challenges such as poverty and inequality.

Various policies and programs have contributed to this progress, focusing on financial inclusion, digitalization, manufacturing, skill development, social welfare, agriculture, and sanitation.

The India we see today has been shaped by numerous figures, including founding fathers like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and B.R. Ambedkar, who laid democratic foundations and planned early development; economic reformers like Manmohan Singh, who spearheaded liberalization; visionaries such as J.R.D. Tata, who built industries; and modern entrepreneurs like Mukesh Ambani, contributing to economic expansion alongside countless farmers, scientists, educators, and workers.

Comparing India of 1950 to today shows remarkable transformation: from poor to powerhouse, now the world’s fourth-largest economy with exponentially growing GDP; from closed to open, shifting from protectionism to a mixed, liberalized economy; and from slow to accelerated growth, overcoming the ‘Hindu rate of growth’ to achieve higher, sustained growth, especially after 1991.

On Republic Day, we are reminded that true growth is meaningful only when it is inclusive and sustainable. As responsible citizens, we must contribute with dedication, unity, and commitment to building a strong and developed India.
