‘India is just like that kite’

In India, we love kites! We love them so much. There are tiny kites, medium kites, and big ones too. Some look like boxes, some are shaped like diamonds, and some are called “deltas” or “para-foils.”

When it is Sankranthi time, everything changes. It is the harvest festival, but we don’t think about food or water. We definitely don’t think about school! We don’t do our homework, and we don’t even care about books.

I even forget to watch my favourite cartoons like Masha and the Bear, Mickey, JJ, or SpongeBob. When I go to sleep, I don’t dream about toys; I only dream about bright, colourful kites and the sharp manjha thread made with glue and glass.

In India, everyone loves two things: flying the kite and running after it when the string gets cut! If you catch it first, it’s yours.

One day, I saw a big boy running after a giant Eagle Kite.

He was very fast, so he reached it before anyone else. He was so happy! But then, another big boy ran up and tried to snatch it out of his hands. The first boy lost his balance and fell down. Because they were fighting, the other kids ran in and grabbed at the kite.

Rip! Tear! Snap!

The kite was destroyed. Everyone got a tiny, useless piece of paper, but the beautiful kite was gone forever.

My teacher says India is just like that kite. We have to take care of it and love it together. If we fight over it, we might break it. But if we stay united and be friends, we can keep our country safe and flying high in the sky.
