On January 26, 1950, India adopted its constitution and became a free sovereign nation. After almost 8 decades of being colonized by the British, Indians fought for their freedom and won through their hard work and resilience. The constitution was a symbol of that very freedom, our ancestors resisted the British for decades just so we can now live in a democratic nation.

The Indian constitution is a set of basic rules that the citizens of the country must follow. It ensures that every citizen of India is treated equally, gets the justice they deserve and does not get discriminated against. The constitution also laid the groundwork for how the Indian government will work and what organ will have what power.

Every citizen has a set of fundamental rights and duties that they are supposed to follow, it is the government’s duty to protect the fundamental rights of the citizens. It was created by the constituent assembly of India; Dr. B. R. Ambedkar led the drafting committee along with other significant figures like Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Republic Day isn’t just a day of celebration; it also reminds us to appreciate the sacrifice of our ancestors who fought for the independence of our now sovereign land. It reminds us of how our country went from suffering for years to now being one of the most developed countries in the world and one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

We as the youth must honor the people who sacrificed their livelihoods for a nation that is led by people who want better for the nation. We must uphold our constitutional values, speak against injustice and look forward to developing our country into a far greater nation. It is our duty to ensure that our nation remains a democracy led by its own people who respect the law and wish the best for the nation.

Every Indian celebrates Republic Day with pride and NRIs though far from home have a deep sense of patriotism for their country and celebrate Republic Day in their own ways. Let us celebrate this Republic Day with patriotism and remember to honor every citizen that gave up their livelihood to fight for their nation so we can live free.
