Blossoms of Life: Palestinian and Japanese Cultures Unite in Evening of Hope and Harmony

For the first time, the International Women’s Group (IWG) proudly hosted a joint cultural event titled “Blossoms of Life, Resilience & Hope,” in collaboration with the Embassies of the State of Palestine and Japan, on 11 January at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Many distinguished and honored guests, including Sheikha Altaf Salem Al Ali Al Sabah and several women Ambassadors to the State of Kuwait were welcomed at the event.

As customary, the event commenced with an introduction by the IWG Public Relations Coordinator, Mrs. Layla Boulos.

In her opening remarks, IWG President Mrs. Marika Kochlamazashvili, spouse of the Ambassador of the Republic of Georgia, expressed her belief that the Palestinian people deserve happiness and well-being, and that their aspirations are deeply linked to the pursuit of peace worldwide. She extended her sincere thanks to H.E. Rami Tahboub, Ambassador of the State of Palestine, and H.E. Kenichiro Mukai, Ambassador of Japan, as well as to both IWG Vice Presidents — Mrs. Rima Khalidi, wife of the Palestinian Ambassador, and Mrs. Midori Mukai, wife of the Japanese Ambassador—for their efforts in organizing the event.

Following the President’s remarks, H.E. Rami Tahboub delivered a speech highlighting the distinguished relationship between Palestine and Japan. He emphasized Japan’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people at multiple levels, particularly in economic development and infrastructure, which contribute to Palestine’s growth and prosperity. He also underscored Japan’s significant role as one of the largest donors to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In his address, H.E. Kenichiro Mukai spoke of the enduring friendship between Japan and Palestine, nurtured over many years. He noted Japan’s continued support for the Palestinian people in their efforts to build an independent, peaceful, and prosperous state through initiatives such as the “Corridor for Peace and Prosperity.”

Serving as master of ceremonies, Mrs. Rima Khalidi emphasized the importance of art and music as universal languages that unite humanity. She noted that cultural diversity reflects the beauty of the world and that the blending of cultures fosters deeper understanding of shared human values.

A recorded message from renowned Palestinian-Japanese soprano Mariam Tamari was screened from Paris. In her address, she reflected on the similarities between Palestinian and Japanese cultures and the resilience of both peoples. She expressed her hope that as ties between Palestine and Japan continue to strengthen, so too will the global commitment to building a just, equitable, and compassionate world. She also called for remembrance of the people of Gaza, whose steadfastness, she said, exemplifies the true meaning of justice and dignity.

The program opened with a video showcasing the natural beauty and cultural diversity of Japan, followed by a film from Jerusalem highlighting the city’s historical, Islamic, and Christian significance.

A special segment featured poetry readings by Mrs. Diala S. Al Alami and Ms. Anna Mukai, inspired by the theme of the event. Their poems drew parallels between the January blossoming of almond trees in Palestine and plum blossoms in Japan, symbolizing renewal, resilience, and the enduring spirit of both peoples.

Throughout the program, paintings by renowned Palestinian artist Vladimir Tamari—father of Mariam Tamari—were displayed before each segment. Known for his abstract watercolors depicting “powerful landscapes of living light,” his work reflects memories of his youth in Palestine, experiences of exile, and nearly five decades of life in Japan.

Members and guests also viewed a short film on the Palestinian Embroidery Obi Project, a social enterprise founded by Japanese entrepreneur Maki Yamamoto, which blends traditional Japanese kimono obis with Palestinian embroidery.

The audience was further captivated by a fashion show featuring a fusion of Kuwaiti, Japanese, and Palestinian attire. Kuwaiti designer Mrs. Sharifa Al Ghanim presented four magnificent kimono-inspired designs incorporating Kuwaiti elements.

During the event, Japanese artist Mr. Toru Uchiyama created a live painting of Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. Among the works he brought from Japan was a special piece titled “Three Springs,” inspired by a poem by Mrs. Al Alami, depicting plum, almond, and cherry blossoms together—symbolizing hope for peace as the world welcomes spring.

Guests were also moved by a documentary featuring Mariam Tamari’s first concert in Palestine in 2015.

A creative culinary demonstration by chefs from Sakura Restaurant showcased sushi infused with falafel, deliciously blending Japanese and Palestinian cuisines.

Another fashion segment featured a remarkable collection of five Palestinian embroidered dresses, over 100 years old, along with three traditional headdresses from the Tareq Rajab Museum, as well as five Japanese kimonos from the Embassy of Japan. The presentation was narrated by Mrs. Faten Abu Ghazaleh and Ms. Anna Mukai.

The event concluded with two musical performances: a recorded duet by Mariam Tamari and her aunt, Tania Tamari (Al Quds Arabiya), followed by a live performance by the Japanese chorus group “Barrel,” led by H.E. Kenichiro Mukai.

Among the interactive installations, guests explored a display dedicated to the “Tree of Life” mosaic from Hisham’s Palace in Jericho—one of the largest floor mosaics in the world—currently preserved through a major project by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Visitors experienced the site through virtual reality headsets provided by the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP).

Another special station featured creative cookies adorned with intricate Palestinian embroidery motifs, prepared by Mrs. Wafa Dudin.

The event stood as a powerful celebration of cultural dialogue, shared humanity, and artistic expression, demonstrating how creativity, tradition, and collaboration can transcend borders. Through music, art, fashion, and storytelling, “Blossoms of Life, Resilience & Hope” reaffirmed a collective commitment to peace, mutual understanding, and the enduring strength of cultures that continue to inspire the world.
