Electricity Ministry aims to complete smart meter project by end of 2026

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is moving ahead with plans to complete the installation of smart electricity meters across all sector facilities by the end of 2026, as part of efforts to modernize the measurement system and enhance the efficiency of energy consumption management.

Informed sources told Al-Rai that Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Minister of Finance and Acting Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Investment, Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, along with the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Adel Al-Zamil, are keen to see the smart meter project completed within the set timeframe, reports Al-Rai daily.

They noted that the customer service sector has already achieved approximately 45 percent completion.

The sources explained that completing the project will deliver significant environmental and strategic benefits for both the ministry and the country, as smart meters will form a key pillar in building smart cities and upgrading infrastructure in line with Vision 2035 and beyond.

The rollout is also expected to reduce overall energy consumption, directly contributing to lower carbon emissions and environmental protection.

They added that smart meters will end reliance on estimated readings, as they accurately record actual consumption and transmit data directly to the service provider.

Consumers will also be able to monitor usage in real time through mobile applications or home display screens, helping them identify high-consuming appliances and reduce waste.

The sources further noted that smart meters can enable consumers to cut their electricity bills by up to 10 percent by adjusting consumption behavior, particularly during peak hours.
