Electricity Ministry pushes forward Shagaya, Mubarakiya, key infrastructure projects

Officials from the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy are scheduled to meet today, Thursday, with the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority to review the latest developments of the Shagaya renewable energy project, specifically its third and fourth phases.
The project, which is set to be awarded to a Chinese state-owned company, is expected to produce around 3,500 megawatts of electricity.
Informed sources at the ministry told Al-Rai that coordination is ongoing with the KDIPA to complete all procedures related to the project.
They noted that Shagaya is considered a strategic initiative and would be the second major Kuwait–China agreement to move forward, following the signing of the contract for the completion of the Mubarak Port project phases.
In a separate development, the ministry has provided a temporary power supply to part of the Mubarakiya area, where festive events are currently being held.
The temporary supply will remain in place for one month, covering the duration of the celebrations planned by the Mubarakiya administration.
Sources confirmed that all procedures related to the temporary power connection have been completed, stressing the ministry’s cooperation with the Mubarakiya administration. The market is regarded as one of Kuwait’s oldest and most prominent heritage landmarks.
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors of the Central Agency for Public Tenders held a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy to discuss 37 items on the agenda related to the ministry’s tenders.
The discussions included projects for the establishment, completion, maintenance and development of the existing Shuwaikh water distribution complex and its associated works.
The meeting also addressed issues related to the management and maintenance of the smart meter system, including its software, equipment and communication networks at the main site, as well as the broader development, operation and management of the smart meter system across Kuwait.
Additionally, the agenda covered the issue of direct contracting for the repair of steam turbines No. 5 and 6 at the Subiya power station.
