KISR plans largest coastal well water factory to boost water security

In line with the accelerating pace of strategic government projects, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has unveiled an unprecedented project, in cooperation with relevant government agencies, to establish the country’s largest factory for the production of coastal well water powered by renewable energy.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Kuwait’s water security system and supporting a sustainable national economy.
During a tour of the Kazma Water Factory, Engineer Mohammed Al-Duwaisan, General Manager of Kazma Company for the Production and Marketing of Scientific Innovations, told Al-Rai that the company plans to expand its water production capacity and double the quantities supplied to the local market.
This expansion will run in parallel with joint efforts with competent authorities to establish the new factory, which will rely on advanced technologies developed by KISR in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity and Water.
Al-Duwaisan explained that Kazma Company serves as the marketing arm of KISR, focusing on converting scientific research and innovations into practical products and services that meet local market needs, support state development plans, and contribute to achieving the objectives of Kuwait Vision 2035.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mansour Ahmed, Director of the Water Desalination Technologies Program at KISR, said the project is part of a broader package of pioneering development initiatives based on public-private sector partnerships.
He noted that the project aligns with the state’s direction toward privatization and the diversification of freshwater sources.
Dr. Ahmed highlighted that seawater extracted from coastal wells is distinguished by its high quality and stable temperature and acidity levels, making it ideal for desalination and potable water production.
He added that the Kazma Water Factory relies on reverse osmosis technology to desalinate coastal water, which is then bottled directly from the sea in metal containers—an innovative and unprecedented Kuwaiti achievement.
