Kuwait enters a new era of firm legislation and shared responsibility: Al-Yousef

90 percent of ‘narcotics’ attempts foiled in one year as Kuwait embarks on a nation-wide mission to ‘Protect the Homeland’, says Interior Minister

The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahd Al-Yousef, affirmed that Kuwait has entered “a new stage whose title is firmness in legislation, awareness in behavior, and shared responsibility between state institutions and society.”

His remarks came during a press conference held this morning at the Kuwait Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies to introduce the new Anti-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Al-Yousef expressed deep gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his “full and unlimited support for all efforts to safeguard the nation and protect the youth,” noting that this support played a decisive role in shaping the new law in its comprehensive form, which reflects the vision of the wise leadership.

He thanked the committee responsible for drafting the legislation, praising the precision and effort that went into preparing a law that meets current challenges and firmly deters anyone who attempts to smuggle or trade in narcotic substances.

Al-Yousef also commended the General Directorate for Drug Control and all sectors of the Ministry of Interior for their relentless efforts to protect the country, pointing out that intensified security and preventive measures succeeded in eliminating nearly 90 percent of narcotics targeting Kuwait and its youth within one year — a testament to the dedication and efficiency of security personnel.

He highlighted that, following the issuance of the decree and its publication in the Official Gazette, he directed the General Department of Public Relations and Security Media to launch a nationwide awareness campaign under the slogan “We Protect the Homeland.”

The campaign, conducted in cooperation with governmental and civil entities, aims to educate the public on the provisions of the new law, its penalties, treatment options, and the dangers of drug abuse through traditional and digital media platforms.

Al-Yousef warned that drug-smuggling networks continue to target Gulf societies through sophisticated regional and international operations, which increases the responsibility on all sides to safeguard national security.

He emphasized that combating drugs is a collective national duty involving families, schools, the media, security agencies, and every individual living on Kuwait’s soil.

He stressed that cooperation between society and the competent authorities forms the cornerstone for the success of the new law and the achievement of its goals.
