Turkish Diwan: A cultural bridge strengthening Kuwait–Turkey relations

The Turkish Diwan, the monthly event organized by the Turkish Embassy in Kuwait has become a well-established tradition that opens the doors of the embassy to Kuwaiti friends, diplomats, students, and cultural enthusiasts, says the Turkish Ambassador to Kuwait, H.E. Tuba Sonmez.

She described the event as a vibrant platform for cultural rapprochement and expanding cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking during the final Diwan of the year held at the embassy the day before yesterday, Ambassador Sonmez said the embassy makes it a priority to host Kuwaiti guests, Turkish students, learners of the Turkish language, diplomats, and representatives of Kuwaiti associations every month.

“This gathering reflects the strong ties between our peoples and offers guests an opportunity to better understand Turkish culture and build wider networks,” she noted.

Sonmez highlighted the growing Kuwaiti interest in Turkey across tourism, economics, and culture. She stressed that the Diwan serves as “an ideal opportunity to strengthen these ties and foster greater academic and economic cooperation,” particularly with Turkish professors and doctors working in Kuwaiti universities and hospitals, as well as ongoing Turkish language courses in local institutions.

Regarding high-level exchanges, the ambassador pointed out that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to Kuwait represented the highest level of political engagement. “We are now in the implementation phase of the signed agreements, working to activate joint programs — an important responsibility we strive to accomplish effectively,” she said.

Sonmez also spoke about the warm atmosphere of the gatherings, noting that the pleasant weather and rain “brought blessings,” and that many diplomats attending have personal connections with Turkey. Some own summer homes there or visit regularly, while others enjoy Turkish coffee, traditional cuisine, and the language.

“Kuwait enjoys warm relations within the diplomatic community,” she added. “We are here as one family, and I always tell our guests: ‘My home is your home.’”

On learning Arabic, Sonmez admitted she understands much of the language but needs more practice. She expressed deep admiration for Arabic poetry and music, especially the works of Majida Al-Roumi, describing Arabic words as “powerful and profound.”

H.E. Dr. Zubaydullo Zubaydov, Dean of the diplomatic corps and Ambassador of Tajikistan, praised the diversity of attendees at the Turkish Diwan, noting that the event coincides with the approach of the festive season.

He described the Diwan as a Kuwaiti tradition that transcends borders, offering diplomats an informal setting away from official duties while celebrating the blending of Kuwaiti and global cultures.

Zubaydov thanked Ambassador Sonmez for hosting diplomats and Turkey enthusiasts and commended her role in strengthening Kuwaiti–Turkish relations. He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for providing continuous support and facilities to diplomatic missions accredited in Kuwait.
