‘GCC cooperation vital to confront environmental challenges and ensure sustainable future’

Acting Director-General of the Environment Public Authority, Nouf Behbehani, affirmed that the environmental challenges confronting the world today — chief among them climate change, resource scarcity, and pollution — necessitate enhanced cooperation and coordination among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

Speaking at the 27th Meeting of GCC Undersecretaries of State for Environmental Affairs, Behbehani stressed the importance of developing sustainable, science-based solutions tailored to the region’s unique environmental conditions, reports Al-Rai daily.

She reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to supporting joint Gulf initiatives and projects aimed at achieving a clean, safe, and sustainable environment, while expressing appreciation to the State of Qatar for its efforts during its previous presidency and to the GCC Secretariat, led by Secretary-General Jassim Al-Budaiwi, for its continuous follow-up on the implementation of environmental decisions.

Meanwhile, Khalid Al-Sunaidi, GCC Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs, commended the member states’ growing focus on environmental and climate issues, highlighting the issuance of 1,231 unified Gulf standards and technical regulations by 2024 to strengthen collective environmental action and align it with the region’s developmental priorities.
