First Kuwaiti appointed to head International Court in The Hague

Tareq Yousef Al-Shumaimry from Kuwait, was recently appointed as the President of the Financial and Administrative Committee at the permanent headquarters of the International Court of Justice at The Hague.

Al-Shumaimry was also appointed as the Executive Committee and Budget Supervisor at the headquarters, making Kuwait the first Arab and Asian country to hold such a post. Kuwait was selected last year for the first time through its representative, Al-Shumaimry, as Financial and Administrative Committee member.

“This is such a great success to Kuwait’s foreign affairs policies,” Kuwait’s Ambassador to The Hague Hafeez Al-Ajmi told KUNA in praise, yesterday, and congratulated Al-Shumaimry for securing this prestigious post.

On his selection as President of the committee, Al-Shumaimry said, “it is an honor for Kuwait to be the first Arab and Asian country to hold this position in the International Court,” especially in view of the fact that “in the past, only members from Europe and the USA held them, since the court was established over a hundred years ago in 1899.”

Al-Shumaimry expressed thanks to Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah AlKhalid Al-Sabah and Minister of Justice Sharida Al-Mouasharji, the Ambassador at the Hague Hafeez Al-Ajmi, and all embassy staff for their full support to Kuwait’s next generation of leaders to hold such international posts, which reflects positively on Kuwait’s image and role internationally.

“This achievement for Kuwait compliments the vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of making Kuwait a trade and financial centre,” he added.

Kuwait joined the International Court of Justice in 2003. The court is an affiliate to the United Nations and one of the most important judicial institutions in the world with 120 members.
