Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has decided to award US President Donald Trump the Order of the Nile, Egypt’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to supporting peace efforts and defusing conflicts,” most notably his role in halting the war in Gaza.
Trump becomes the fifth US president to receive this prestigious award in the history of Cairo–Washington relations.
Trump arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh to participate in the peace summit hosted by Egypt, which brings together world leaders to finalize agreements aimed at ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
According to Egyptian Law No. 12 of 1972, the Nile Necklace can be awarded to heads of state, crown princes, vice presidents, or individuals who have provided distinguished services to the nation or humanity.
The medal, made of pure gold or gilded silver, features pharaonic symbols and a pendant representing the Nile, symbolizing the unity of Egypt. It is worn during official ceremonies, marking it as the highest honor Egypt can bestow.
Over the past century, the award has been given to international leaders including King Felipe VI of Spain, former Presidents of Cyprus and Portugal, King Salman of Saudi Arabia, and King Hamad of Bahrain, as well as global icons such as Nelson Mandela, Jacques Chirac, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth II, and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Within Egypt, notable recipients include Presidents Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, Hosni Mubarak, Adly Mansour, and Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, and prominent figures in science and literature such as Naguib Mahfouz, Ahmed Zewail, Mohamed ElBaradei, and Sir Magdi Yacoub.
