Wrong overtaking tops traffic violations as Kuwait records nearly 1,900 accidents in a week

A security source said wrong overtaking accounted for a majority of traffic violations last week in spite of directives having been issued by the General Traffic Department to reduce such violations due to their role in causing serious accidents and traffic congestion across Kuwait.
According to the weekly report issued by the GTD (from September 29 to October 3), Kuwait recorded a total of 1,887 traffic accidents. Of these, 284 accidents resulted in injuries or fatalities, while 1,603 were limited to material damages only.
During the same week, traffic officers issued a total of 40,056 different types of citations, underscoring the department’s heightened enforcement efforts. The report detailed the breakdown by governorate and department, revealing that Hawalli Governorate topped the list with 8,337 violations, followed by the Capital Traffic Department with 7,026, and the Highways Department with 7,020, reports Al-Anba daily.
In fourth place was the Farwaniya Traffic Department with 5,314 violations, followed by Ahmadi with 5,153, and Jahra with 4,303. The Mubarak Al-Kabeer Department recorded 1,904 violations, while the Tasks Department issued 250, the Security Control Department recorded 101, and the Operations Department issued 12 violations — the lowest count in the report.
Traffic patrols also impounded 122 vehicles and motorcycles, including 113 vehicles that failed to meet safety and durability standards, while the rest were motorcycles seized for various offenses.
Authorities further recorded 40 serious violations, which were referred to the Traffic Police for legal action, and 44 juveniles were apprehended for driving without licenses. The juveniles were subsequently referred to the Juvenile Prosecution for appropriate measures.
In addition, police identified 31 wanted vehicles, including those involved in judicial and theft cases, and 57 wanted individuals were arrested, four of whom were linked to fraud cases.
Traffic officers also detained 144 expatriates with expired residency permits, 13 individuals in abnormal conditions, and two people found in possession of narcotic substances. Those involved in drug-related offenses were referred to the General Department for Drug Control.
Officials emphasized that the Ministry of Interior continues to prioritize traffic safety, law enforcement, and deterrence measures, particularly against reckless driving and overtaking violations, which remain among the leading causes of road accidents in the country.
