Hind Kabawat, Syrian Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, affirmed on Wednesday that Kuwait has always been a steadfast supporter of Syria and its people, offering continuous assistance that reflects the depth of fraternal ties between the two countries. Her remarks came on the sidelines of her participation in the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Leaders Meeting held in the Saudi city of Al-Ula, reported Al Jarida newspaper.
Minister Kabawat highlighted that Kuwait has stood by Syria for nearly fourteen years, particularly in humanitarian and relief efforts, underscoring its consistent role in supporting the Syrian people during challenging times.
She commended Kuwait’s relief and humanitarian response to the Syrian people, praising its solidarity and continued efforts to support their aspirations for development and prosperity.
Kuwait has maintained a clear stance on the Syrian crisis since it erupted in 2011. Through the United Nations Security Council, it consistently called for an end to war crimes in Syria, the removal of obstacles to humanitarian aid, and the lifting of sieges on residential areas. Kuwait also voiced concern over the ongoing use of internationally prohibited heavy weapons against civilians.
During the crisis, Kuwait hosted the first three donor conferences dedicated to supporting Syria, held in 2013, 2014, and 2015. These gatherings, organized in cooperation with UN agencies, resulted in generous pledges with a fulfillment rate of nearly 90 percent.
In 2016, Kuwait co-chaired with the United Kingdom the fourth donor conference in London, which addressed the humanitarian situation inside Syria and the challenges facing neighboring host countries. Kuwait has also remained an active participant in later conferences, including the Brussels conference organized by the European Union last March, titled Side by Side with Syria: Responding to Needs for a Successful Transition.
Beyond conferences, Kuwait has extended support through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, and charitable organizations. These initiatives have provided extensive aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Syria and to refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey.
Commenting on the Munich Security Conference Leaders meeting in Al-Ula, Minister Kabawat stressed the importance of participation, particularly in light of the international momentum surrounding the event.
“A new and a free nation”
She said the meeting reflects Syria’s desire to present itself as a new, free nation working to build partnerships, especially with Arab countries. Discussions addressed global trade, regional crises, energy transition, maritime security, nuclear safety, and enhanced international cooperation.
