Health Ministry hails milestone in kidney transplants, doubling monthly average

Record 30 kidney transplants carried out at Jaber Hospital in August, unprecedented achievement in one month

As part of its efforts to strengthen Kuwait’s leadership in organ transplantation and enhance the quality of healthcare services, the Ministry of Health announced a record medical achievement — 30 successful kidney transplants carried out at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital in August 2025.

This figure surpasses the monthly average of around 17 procedures, underscoring the health system’s growing capacity to provide advanced and life-saving services with high efficiency, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The milestone reflects coordinated national efforts by key institutions, including the Organ Transplant Department at Jaber Hospital, the Kuwait Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation, the Organ Provision Program, and the Immunology and Kidney Transplant Laboratory at the Yacoub Behbehani Center.

The achievement was also made possible by close cooperation among multidisciplinary teams at Jaber Hospital — comprising transplant surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, nursing staff, infection control and sterilization units, and blood laboratories — working together as a model of integrated medical teamwork.

This progress builds on strategic initiatives introduced by Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi in recent years. In March 2024, Jaber Hospital established a dedicated Organ Transplant Department, followed in June by the opening of the Kuwait Center for Kidney Diseases and Transplantation.

The National Kidney Transplant Program, launched in September 2024 through family exchange transplants, has since driven a qualitative leap in services. In 2024 alone, the program achieved a record of 149 successful operations, laying the foundation for the continued expansion of kidney transplantation in Kuwait.
