A US study found that older adults with hearing loss who use hearing aids are up to 61% less likely to develop dementia compared to those who do not.
Researchers explained that the brain’s extra effort to process weak sounds can reduce efficiency in other cognitive functions, accelerating decline and increasing dementia risk.
The study tracked 2,953 participants over 20 years, revealing that only 17% of those with moderate to severe hearing loss used hearing aids despite the significant protective effect.
Similar research by Johns Hopkins University showed hearing aids reduced cognitive decline by 48% in three years, highlighting early intervention as key to preserving brain health and reducing dementia risk.
