Modi calls for Indian self-sufficiency amid US tariff threats over Russian oil

India, which won independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, now finds itself balancing its historic partnership with Moscow against the economic and strategic pressures of its growing ties with Washington.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the mammoth crowd at the iconic Red Fort on Friday said, “On this 79th Independence Day, we remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who gifted us a nation built on courage and hope. Today, I call upon every citizen to strengthen the journey toward a self-reliant India — an India that is secure in its energy, advanced in its technology, and proud of its heritage. True freedom means standing strong on our own feet, whether in agriculture, defense, or space exploration. Together, with innovation and unity, we will build an India that leads the world with dignity and self-confidence,” warning that the nation’s freedom would be diminished if it remained overly dependent on foreign powers.

His remarks came as Washington threatens to raise tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50% should New Delhi fail to reduce its reliance on Russian crude within the next three weeks.

US President Donald Trump has set an August deadline for India — one of the world’s largest oil importers — to diversify its energy sources, part of Washington’s broader effort to cut off funding for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“We realize that we are still dependent on many countries for our energy needs,” Modi admitted, but stressed that “to build a truly independent India, we must achieve energy independence.”

The prime minister pledged to act as a “shield” to protect Indian interests, especially in agriculture, a sector that could be hit hard by tariff hikes.

He also urged scientists and engineers to accelerate domestic innovation in fighter jet engines, semiconductors, and military equipment. “By the end of this year, we will have made-in-India semiconductors available in the market,” Modi announced, unveiling plans that also include a national space station and a domestic “defense shield” within the next decade.

Despite the tariff tensions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated India on its Independence Day, underscoring the “great importance” of US-India relations and expressing optimism about building a “better future” together.
