WhatsApp launches new safety features to fight scams

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, has announced a series of new security features aimed at helping users detect and avoid scams, particularly in group and one-on-one chats. The move comes after the platform shut down more than 6.8 million scam-related accounts linked to fraudulent activities targeting users worldwide.

One of the key updates includes a “security overview” feature that appears when a user is added to a group by someone not on their contact list. This tool will display essential group details — such as who added you and whether any members are in your contacts. Notifications from the group will be muted until the user chooses whether to stay or leave.

WhatsApp is also testing new safeguards for private chats. Scammers often try to connect on other platforms before switching to WhatsApp. To counter this, users will now be alerted when a message comes from someone outside their contacts, along with additional context about the sender.

Meta revealed that it is working with OpenAI to dismantle fraud networks, including one operating from a scam center in Cambodia.

These schemes involve a range of tactics—from fake offers of cash for likes, to cryptocurrency and pyramid scams.

According to Meta, scammers used ChatGPT to craft bait messages, luring victims into WhatsApp chats, then redirecting them to Telegram, where they were manipulated into performing tasks and depositing funds into encrypted accounts.

WhatsApp urged users to remain cautious:

  • Don’t rush to respond.
  • Verify the legitimacy of the request.
  • Question unusual or urgent demands.

The platform emphasized that staying alert and informed is the best defense against online fraud.
