Around 70 roads, public squares will retain their names, while 591 will be renamed

. . . only rulers and historical figures to retain names on streets

The Kuwait Municipality has proposed amendments to Articles 4 and 5 of Municipal Council Resolution No. MB/MQ 4/45/04/2023 D2, issued on September 18, 2023, concerning the rules for naming cities, suburbs, streets, and public squares.

These amendments aim to align with Cabinet Resolution No. 666 from meeting No. 2025/19 and follow a legal opinion from the Legal Department.

The changes restrict naming cities, suburbs, and regions after individuals — limiting it to rulers such as the Amir or Crown Prince, reports Al-Jarida daily.

Roads and public squares may only be named after prominent personalities like Kuwaiti rulers, leaders of friendly nations, historical personalities, and ruling family members, as well as countries, capitals, and cities based on reciprocal naming.

Importantly, the Municipality plans to move toward numbering roads, streets, and public squares, except for the approved categories. Around 70 roads and public squares will retain their names, while 591 will be renamed by numbers in accordance with the updated guidelines.

The Municipal Council has approved the proposal and referred it to the Minister of State for Municipal Affairs for ratification. Once approved and published in the Official Gazette, the changes will be implemented.

The Municipality’s Construction Department will rename secondary streets, while the Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport will handle highways.

The Capital Governorate leads with 231 named streets, while Mubarak Al-Kabeer has the fewest at 28.
