Kuwait makes global strides in robotic surgery with remote prostate operation

The Ministry of Health has announced a groundbreaking medical achievement for Kuwait’s healthcare system — the successful completion of a radical prostatectomy using the MEDBOT surgical robot through remote surgery technology.

This marks a significant milestone in the country’s advancement in specialized and robotic surgeries, reports Al-Rai daily.

According to the Ministry, the surgery was conducted on a man in his sixties diagnosed with non-metastatic prostate cancer. The procedure took place at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Kidney and Urology Center in the Sabah Specialized Medical District.

In a remarkable feat, Dr. Saad Al-Dosari, a Kuwaiti consultant in kidney and urology surgery and head of the surgery department, led the operation remotely from Strasbourg, France — nearly 5,000 kilometers away.

The procedure was broadcast live as part of the World Robot Surgeons Congress in Strasbourg, attended by more than 2,500 international surgeons and specialists. Minister of Health Dr.

Ahmed Al-Awadhi was present at the congress to support the Kuwaiti medical team, emphasizing the ministry’s dedication to advancing healthcare technologies and fostering local medical talent.

Dr. Al-Awadhi praised the operation as a testament to the capabilities of Kuwaiti professionals to compete on the global stage.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge surgical techniques and providing an innovative environment for national medical teams.

This operation is the ninth remote robotic surgery successfully performed in Kuwait under the leadership of Dr. Al-Dosari and his team. Previous procedures have included one conducted from Shanghai, China, and others performed locally at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center over the past six months.

The Ministry described this achievement as a milestone in the country’s medical history, reinforcing Kuwait’s global reputation in the field of robotic surgery and highlighting its ambition to establish a regional and international model in advanced healthcare.
