AEO Chief says, committed to Arab cooperation and sustainable energy security

The Secretary-General of the Arab Energy Organization, Jamal Al-Loughani, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to strengthening joint Arab cooperation and supporting member states in achieving sustainable development and energy security, all while ensuring market balance and long-term stability.

Speaking during the 12th edition of Sonatrach’s Scientific and Technical Days in Oran, western Algeria, Al-Loughani described the event as a vital platform for collaboration and innovation among global energy leaders.

“The continued convening of this gathering is proof of its success. It offers an exceptional opportunity for brainstorming and collective thinking, especially in support of digital transformation and sustainable development in the energy sector,” he said.

Al-Loughani noted that while oil, gas, and coal have fueled economic and social growth for over a century, the global energy landscape is rapidly changing. He warned of declining investment in the petroleum sector amid soaring electricity demand, stressing the need for a comprehensive reassessment of the sector’s direction.

“There is a pressing need to strike a delicate balance between securing energy supplies and meeting sustainability goals,” he explained. “Societies today are seeking solutions that ensure both energy security and minimal environmental impact.”

The Secretary-General emphasized that the Arab Energy Organization is acutely aware of these evolving dynamics and is working to empower its member states to achieve a just transition to a clean energy future, based on their individual capacities and interests.

Highlighting the organization’s strategic partnership with the Algerian Petroleum Institute, Al-Loughani announced the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding focused on joint cooperation in training and capacity development.

He said the collaboration has already produced pioneering training programs—some of the first of their kind in the Arab world—which reflect a deep commitment to fostering Arab talent and preparing them to lead in a fast-evolving energy landscape.

“We look forward to deepening this cooperation in the coming period to support the development of Arab competencies and enhance their ability to respond to the sector’s rapid transformations,” Al-Loughani added.

He concluded by praising the conference as a strategic platform bridging the present and future of the Arab energy sector, and one that lays the foundation for a new generation of cooperation, innovation, and leadership in energy development.
